Alanya is more than just a tourist destination with sea, beach, and sun. It has incredible cultural values waiting to be explored. Roman cities and Seljuk monuments can be found on almost every hill of the city. The Alanya Municipality and the Ministry of Tourism are working to open these cultural treasures to tourism. One of these ancient cities is the Ancient City of Naula, situated in the Mahmutlar neighbourhood of Alanya.
Naula ancient city is being restored for tourism
The restoration works at the Naula Ancient City in the Mahmutlar Neighborhood dating back to the Byzantine period are ongoing. Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik, who is overseeing the cleaning efforts at the ancient city, stated, “Our goal is to restore the Naula Ancient City to promote tourism.”
The preservation and unveiling of the archaeological values of the Naula Ancient City in Mahmutlar Neighborhood, which is located within the 1st Degree Archaeological Site, is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Alanya Municipality. This endeavour aims to promote cultural tourism. The cleaning work in the ancient city, initiated by the Alanya Municipality and Alanya Museum teams about a month ago, is progressing meticulously. The cleaning of the site, while ensuring the preservation of its historical values, is expected to be completed within the next month. Subsequently, the Alanya Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism will collaborate on a landscaping project to transform the Naula Ancient City into a visitable archaeological site.
Mayor Özçelik Inspected
Alanya Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik, Deputy Mayor Murat Levent Koçak, and Technical Affairs Director Atahan Uyar inspected the Naula Ancient City. Mayor Özçelik, who inspected the works on site, instructed the team to speed up the restoration efforts to open the ancient city to tourism. He also emphasized the importance of completing the processes for cultural tourism in the region as soon as possible and making it a centre of attraction. Mayor Özçelik stated, “During our second visit of the day, we are at the Naula Ancient City, a Byzantine structure with a history dating back to the Byzantine period. Under the protocol between the Alanya Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, cleaning of this site began approximately one month ago and will continue for around one more month. The city boasts many historical structures including six temples and churches. It is located just 300 meters from the sea and is centrally situated in our Mahmutlar Neighborhood. Once the cleaning is completed, our goal is to open the Naula Ancient City to tourism by implementing necessary projects.”
